A bedspread should round out the bed, not overwhelm it. But which dimensions suit which bed size, and how much fabric should hang down the sides? If you shop by mattress size alone, you often end up with a cover that looks either too skimpy or pools on the floor. This guide offers concrete size recommendations for twin, double, and king-size beds, along with the rule of thumb for overhang and what to watch for with box spring beds in particular.
A bedspread that's too small shifts out of place when you smooth it over the bed and leaves the mattress edge exposed. One that's too large pools on the floor and looks more cluttered than put-together. The right size depends not only on your bed size, but also on bed height, any storage base (bed box), and how much overhang you want.
Why bed size alone isn't enough
Two beds with identical mattress dimensions can be completely different heights. A classic bed frame with a low slatted base needs less fabric than a box spring bed, whose sleeping surface including topper often sits 60 cm or more above the floor. If you choose a bedspread based solely on mattress width, you're ignoring this height difference and risk ending up with a cover that no longer reaches the bed base.
The basic rule: plan for overhang on each side
As a rule of thumb: bedspread width = mattress width plus twice the desired overhang. A common range is 30 to 45 cm of overhang per side. Lower beds usually need only 30 to 35 cm, while taller box spring beds need more like 40 to 45 cm so the bed base and legs stay fully covered. For length, the usual approach is to add around 50 to 60 cm at the foot end to the mattress length, if you also want the bedspread to drape over the pillows.
Bedspread size by bed size at a glance
The overview below provides guideline values for common German bed sizes. It doesn't replace the measurements given for a specific product, but it offers solid guidance for an initial size comparison.
- 90 x 200 cm (twin bed): bedspread approx. 180 x 260 cm
- 140 x 200 cm: bedspread approx. 220 x 240 cm
- 160 x 200 cm: bedspread approx. 240 x 260 cm
- 180 x 200 cm (French bed): bedspread approx. 260 x 260 cm
- 200 x 200 cm (king size): bedspread approx. 270 x 280 cm
Additional factors: bed height, pillows, and bed base
If you also want to tuck pillows under the bedspread, you'll need a bit more fabric at the head end, independent of the foot-end overhang from the basic rule - exactly how much depends on the pillow size. For box spring beds with a pull-out storage base, it's also worth checking the fully extended state: the side overhang should still be enough to cover the base even then.
Material affects the visual result
Heavy, structured fabrics hang straight and emphasize crisp edges, so even a slightly shorter overhang still looks tidy. Lighter materials such as cotton or linen drape more softly and tend to need a bit more fabric so they don't look stretched or skimpy. It's worth keeping this difference in mind when comparing two models of similar size, especially if you can't feel the fabric in person before buying.
Bedspread or throw - when the smaller option is enough
A throw is not a substitute for a full-size bedspread, but a smaller accent blanket, usually laid crosswise over the foot of the bed. Typical throw dimensions range from 130 x 170 cm to 150 x 200 cm - enough for a decorative accent at the end of the bed, but without full overhang on the sides. If you're looking for complete coverage of the entire bed, you need the larger bedspread from the table above.
Before you buy: always measure your own bed
Guideline values are no substitute for measuring your own bed. Measure the width and length of your mattress as well as the total height of the bed from the floor before choosing a bedspread, especially if you have an unusual bed frame or an additional topper. This helps you avoid returns due to incorrect sizing and lets you check in advance whether the bedspread should also reach over the pillows.
